Hewitt’s rape sentencing postponed

Convicted rapist and former tennis star Bob Hewitt's sentencing was postponed in the Pretoria High Court, to May 18.

Hewitt, who appeared in court on April 17, for sentencing, was found guilty on two counts of rape and one of sexual assault.

Postponement was granted to allow arguments of sentencing by his defence team.

Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) said it is disappointed that the state allowed the postponement.

“This is a blow for his victims, who have come from afar to the court, expecting justice to prevail,” said WMACA director Miranda Friedmann.

Friedmann, however, said they understand that the law has taken its course so far in this case and that “our” laws allow for arguments of sentencing, hence this postponement.

“We understand that the sentencing will be governed by another set of sentencing legislation, but we trust this court will arrive at an adequate sentence.

“We expect the law to take its course as it did in its sound conviction,” said Friedmann, adding that they expect the state to impose a punitive sentence of direct imprisonment.

She said Hewitt must serve time to feel the consequences of what he did to others, as nothing else will give him that message.
