Learners debate Chris Hani’s legacy

Learners from across Ekurhuleni were rewarded with prizes such as tablets, notepads and e-readers, following a Chris Hani Debate, on Wednesday, April 8, at the Boksburg Civic Centre.

A total of 500 learners from schools in Ekurhuleni and the Chris Hani District Municipality took part in the competition.

According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, topical issues such as the abolishment of the minimum wage, the replacement of the colonial symbols with statues of the freedom fighters and the idea that Chris Hani should have been South Africa’s first democratic president were a bone of contention during the debate sessions.

The competition is in alignment with Chris Hani Month.

“All the learners came out with guns blazing during their arguments and they were judged on their performance, how extensive and thorough their research was and how well they understood each of the topics they were presenting,” said Gadebe.

Queens College, from Queenstown, in the Eastern Cape, won the debate against Dr Harry Gwala Secondary School, from Daveyton.
