Police come under fire during robbery

Two Boksburg police officers came under fire, on Saturday afternoon, April 11, after coming across an armed trio robbing a Sunward Park family.

According to the Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Lieut Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese, while two officers were patrolling the streets of Sunward Park, at about 2.50pm, they heard a scream of pain emanating from a house along Tosca Road.

“They approached the house, but as they drew closer, the driver of a waiting getaway vehicle hooted his horn at the thugs inside, apparently to alert them that police were around,” said Ngobese.

A few moments later, two gunmen exited the house and opened fire on the police, who then retaliated by fighting fire with fire.

“The shoot-out continued for a few minutes, before the thugs managed to get into their white WV Polo and fled the scene.”

Despite all the gunfire, neither the officers nor the robbers were injured.

“We are very grateful and thankful for the fact that our members did not get shot,” said Ngobese.

Nothing was taken from the house.

Police are still looking for the gunmen, and a case of attempted murder has been opened.

Police are appealing to anyone who has any information, which could lead to the arrests of the robbers, to contact the Boksburg police, on 011 841 6859.
