Gang violence leaves two men dead in Reiger Park

Two men were killed and one injured in what appears to be gang-related violence in Reiger Park on On March 29.

The trouble that led to the shootings, however, started during an event held at the Reiger Park Civic Centre, on March 27.

“During the event at the civic centre, a gang of men arrived and dragged one of the men, believed to be from a different gang, out of the venue, before badly assaulting him,” said Mathebula.

“It is believed that, in reaction, the gang to whom the civic centre victim belongs retaliated and gunned down two men at a party on Sunny Street, Reiger Park. They were both killed.”

Multiple shots were fired at the deceased, but it’s unclear how many of the bullets hit them.

Mathebula said this escalated the violence between the gangs, which led to a gunman (allegedly from the gang that was under fire in Sunny Street) opening fire on another proposed gang member, on Buttercup Street, Reiger Park.

The Buttercup gunman was subsequently arrested by the EMPD on Thursday, April 2, and charged with attempted murder.

The severely injured victim was rushed to Sunward Park Hospital.

Police have since arrested five of the attackers for the assault at the civic centre, and they were charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

No arrests have been made regarding the shooting in Sunny Street, but Mathebula said arrests might follow soon.
