Court news: Guilty verdicts for theft

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrates Court:

* Quintin Vermaak (31), of Witfield, was convicted of theft on March 30.

Vermaak pleaded guilty and was found guilty of stealing a trailer belonging to J Basson, in June, 2014.

He has no previous convictions and the court sentenced him to three years in prison, wholly suspended for five years.

Magistrate Emmanuelle Magampa presided and prosecutor Angeline Mooiman represented the State.

* Ronnie Mothoa (41), of Vosloorus, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft.

He was found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison on March 31.

Mothoa stole camping equipment valued at R40 000, belonging to Eugene Veldman, in February 2011.

He has three previous convictions for theft, one for assault and one for malicious damage to property.

Magistrates Abel Shilubane presided and prosecutor Maria Olivier represented the State.

* Siphumelelo Tom (25), of Vosloorus, was convicted of theft on April 8.

On Valentine’s Day, last year, Tom stole cheese worth R160.95 from Shoprite. He has two previous convictions, for housebreaking in 2011 and assault in 2006.

He was sentenced to 36 months in prison, 12 months of which were suspended for five years.

Magistrate Hans Havenga presided and prosecutor Palesa Setshedi represented the State.

* Constance Msimango (43), of Vosloorus, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft, on March 11.

She stole clothing valued at R500 from Pep Stores, in March, this year.

She has no previous convictions and was sentenced to a fine of R3 000, or nine months in prison, wholly suspended for five years.

Magistrate Jurg Vivier presided and prosecutor Themba Maluleke represented the State.

* Franklin Jacobs (23), of Reiger Park, was found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He pleaded guilty and was found guilty and sentenced on March 31.

In November, 2014, Jacobs assaulted Georgene Jacobs by hitting her head against a pole.

He has a previous conviction and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for five years.

Magistrate Hans Havenga presided and prosecutor Palesa Setshedi represented the State.

* Sifiso Cele (19), of Yeoville, was convicted of theft on March 31, following a guilty plea.

Cele stole seven jeans worth R8 000 from Edgars.

He has a previous conviction for theft in Durban and was sentenced to a fine of R6 000, or six months in prison.

A further 12 months was imposed, but suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit fraud within that time.

He was also ruled unfit to possess a firearm.

Magistrate Hans Havenga presided and prosecutor Palesa Setshedi represented the State.

* Martinus Verheer (32), of Farrarmere, Benoni, was convicted of two counts of theft, on March 31.

Verheer stole two pairs of jeans worth R1 225 from Truworths, on March 3, and two more pairs, valued at R300, from Jet Store, on April 2.

Verheer has 12 previous convictions of theft, committed over a number of years.

He was sentenced to 18 months on each count and the sentences will run consecutively.

Magistrate Hans Havenga presided and prosecutor Palesa Setshedi represented the State.

* Luzuko Ngxangxa pleaded guilty and was found guilty of three counts of theft, on March 30.

Ngxangxa stole jewellery valued at R1 353.00 from Truworths in May, 2013, five pairs of shoes from Checkers worth R700, in July, 2013, and two pairs of sandals from Pep Stores, valued at R198, in January, this year.

He has 10 previous convictions and was sentenced to 18 months on each count.

The sentences will run consecutively.
