Be alert when using an ATM

The Boksburg North SAPS is reminding the community to be alert and conscious of their surroundings when using ATMs.

Communications officer, Lieut Juanita Coetzer, has issued the following ATM safety tips:

* Never give your card, pin number, or anything that it is written on to anyone.

* Do not keep the note your pin is on, with your card. Keep it separate from your card.

* Do not use a poorly lit ATM.

* Stand close to the machine when you are busy with a transaction and keep your hand over the keys when putting your pin in.

* Never accept help from strangers.

* Criminals work in groups; one distracts you, another will grab your card, and another will run away with your card.

* When your card has been swallowed, immediately contact your bank to cancel it.

* Explosions at ATMs are new crimes which have been escalating since 2006.

* When approaching an ATM and you find it is damaged, or you see suspicious activities around it, immediately phone 10111.
