Court news: Wrongdoers sent to jail

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrates Court:

* Elias Makewa (21), of Vosloorus, was found guilty of attempted theft (count one) and trespassing (count two) when he appeared in court on March 16.

He pleaded guilty and was found guilty and sentenced to 18 months on count one, suspended for five years.

On count two, the passing of sentence was postponed for five years.

Makewa unlawfully entered a property in Zamkele Avenue, Vosloorus, on January 14, and attempted to steal the owner’s goods, valued at R10 000.

He has a previous conviction of attempted murder, from July 2010.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the case and prosecutor Themba Maluleke represented the State.

* December Njokweni (28), of Windmill Park, was found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, on March 16.

He stabbed Colin Thwala with a knife on December 10, 2014, leading to Thwala sustaining deep lacerations to the back of his right arm.

He pleaded not guilty, but the court found him guilty and sentenced him to a fine of R3 000 or nine months in jail. Njokweni has five previous convictions.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the case and prosecutor Themba Maluleke represented the State.

* Jabulani Mkwanazi (30), of Vosloorus, was sentenced on March 21.

On November 18, last year, he assaulted Thabo Gicilishane by stabbing and hitting him with a beer bottle.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, but the court found him guilty and sentenced him to a fine of R5 000 or 15 months in prison.

He has a previous conviction for assault.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the case and prosecutor Themba Maluleke represented the State.

* Pule Masholo (19), of Villa Lisa, was sentenced after pleading guilty to a charge of robbery on March 17.

Masholo assaulted a man on December 14, last year, and took his bicycle by force.

The court found him guilty and he was sentenced to three years in imprisonment.

He has two previous convictions, for theft and robbery.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the case and prosecutor Themba Maluleke represented the State.

* Clifford Alexandra (30), of Reiger Park, was convicted of a charge of robbery, on March 16, following a guilty plea.

Alexandra assaulted T du Plessis and took R300, a bank card and a cellphone from him by force.

He has a previous conviction for theft, dating back to 2004.

He was sentenced to three years imprisonment, which the court suspended for five years.

Magistrate Emmanuel Magampa presided over the case and prosecutor Angeline Mooiman represented the State.

* Janie van der Merwe (43), of Boksburg, was found guilty of drug possession.

On January 1, he was found in possession of illegal drugs weighing 0.03g, in 14th Avenue, Boksburg.

He has two previous convictions, for theft in 2001 and assault in 2011. He was sentenced to a fine of R2 000 or four months in prison.

Magistrate Emmanuel Magampa presided over the case and prosecutor Angeline Mooiman represented the State.

* Denivan Whye (24), of Reiger Park, was found guilty of pointing of firearm, on March 16.

He pointed his Z88 pistol at Vronieck Swanepoel, in November, last year. He pleaded not guilty but the court found him guilty and sentenced him to a fine of R2 000, or four months in prison.

The court also declared him unfit to own a firearm. He has no previous convictions.
