Fix districts before radical merger of schools – DA

The DA has cautioned Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi regarding the proposed merger of Model C and township schools, in the province.

“This is a radical step, which should be matched with efficiency and bold leadership,” said DA Gauteng spokesperson on Education, MPL Khume Ramulifho.

“However, critical issues within the Provincial Education Department must be resolved first.

“These include the urgent fixing of districts and head offices as supporting institutions, delayed salary payments to some teachers and the non-payment of pensions to many retired teachers.”

The DA fully supports the diversification of our schooling system, as a means to redress the imbalances of the past.

Ramulifho says education plays a crucial role in ensuring that people are able to enter the economy and provide a future for their families.

“However, the department needs to get its house in order before attempting such a radical step.

“All plans intended to enhance the quality of learning and teaching must be sustainable and affordable,” says Ramulifho.

The Advertiser has contacted the Gauteng Education Department seeking information on whether this possible merger of schools might also take place in Boksburg, but no response had been received at the time of going to press. – @IschkeBoksburg
