Rondebult accident leaves man with severe injuries

A man in his 60s sustained severe injuries when the vehicle in which he was travelling overturned several times on the N12 highway east, near the Rondebult off-ramp, on March 9.

ER24’s Werner Vermaak said rescue workers who arrived on the scene found the man still trapped behind the steering wheel of his Hyundai 1-tonner, in a critical condition.

The Ekurhuleni Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life to free him from the wreckage, while paramedics were busy treating him.

“Due to the severity of his injuries, the paramedics called for the ER24 Emergency Helicopter to airlift him to a hospital, in Johannesburg, for further treatment,” said Vermaak.

He was treated for several injuries, including multiple fractures.

The exact cause of the incident is not yet known and it was not clear on scene if another vehicle was involved in the collision.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police assisted with closing off the highway while the helicopter landed on the road.
