Court news: Fined R600 for R10 worth of dagga

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrates Court:

* Sandile Mtshali (28), of Ramaphosa, and Thulang Mokoena (18), of Villa Lisa informal settlement, were each sentenced to five years in prison.

They pleaded guilty and were found guilty, on March 4, of assault and theft.

Mtshali and Mokoena unlawfully and intentionally assaulted John Myembezi and took his cellphone, valued at R1 000, by force, on October 31, last year.

The two have no previous convictions.

Magistrate Sijren Harichand presided over the case and prosecutor Nkosazana Tyeku represented the State.

* Patric Vucherpfeniying (43), of Benoni, pleaded guilty and was found guilty of possession of drugs, on February 27.

Vucherpfeniying was found in possession of dagga valued at R10 on February 18.

He had no previous convictions and was sentenced to a fine of R600 or 30 days in prison.

Magistrate Emmanuel Magampa presided over the case and Angelina Mooiman represented the State.

* Elton Walters (27), of Ramaphosa informal settlement, pleaded guilty to a charge of robbery and was found guilty.

He was sentenced to three years in jail on February 25.

He unlawfully and intentionally assaulted T Matshali and took her cellphone, worth R600, by force, on November 8, 2014.

He had two previous convictions – malicious damage to property in 2013 and a domestic violence transgression, coupled with malicious damage to property, in 2014.

Magistrate Emmanuel Magampa presided over the case and Angeline Mooiman represented the State.

* Asanda Sweli (32), of Reiger Park, pleaded guilty and was found guilty on February 27.

Sweli was charged with malicious damage to property after he broke the windows and doors of Yalekwa Mngolozeni’s premises on December 13, last year.

He had no previous convictions and was sentenced to a fine of R1 000 or 60 days in prison.

Magistrate Ryan van Harte presided over the case and prosecutor Busi Mofokeng represented the State.

* Trevor Collins (34), of Reiger Park, was sentenced on February 27, for possession of drugs.

On January 8, Collins was found to be in possession of 11 cigarettes of dagga. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to R3 000 or six months in prison, of which R1 500 and three months were suspended for five years.

He had a previous conviction for housebreaking in 1997.

Magistrate Ryan van Harte presided over the case and prosecutor Busi Mofokeng represented the State.

Nathan Brown, of Reiger Park, was sentenced on February 24.

Brown was charged with housebreaking and theft (count one) and resisting arrest (count two), after he broke into the Reiger Park Police Station and stole alcohol.

He was sentenced to three years on count one and six months on count two.

The sentences will run concurrently.
