Sunward Park’s action plan to combat crime

A crime-awareness campaign, aimed at reducing house robberies, burglaries and thefts was held in Sunward Park, on Saturday morning, February 28.

Using a fleet of police and CPF vehicles, members of the EMPD, Boksburg SAPS and Sunward CPF drove through the streets of the area to distribute hundreds of crime-awareness leaflets to bystanders.

CPF members also used the opportunity to raise money for the forum, by selling food prior to the procession.

According to CPF chairperson Pieter van Rooyen, Sunward Park is one of the Boksburg suburbs plagued by crime.

“We have witnessed an upsurge of crime in Sunward Park over time; no one feels safe, because so many people have been robbed, had their houses broken into and their cars stolen,” he said.

“Crime has become our number one enemy and it’s time for all of us to come together and claim back our streets.”

The CPF is confident that crime can be eradicated in Sunward Park if the residents would stop undermining the forum’s crime combating efforts.

Handing out crime-awareness leaflets to Lloyd Gumede (left) is one of the Sunward Park CPF members, Anna Taylor (72). Despite her age, Taylor said she is determined to contribute her time to rid Sunward Park of criminals.

Currently the CPF consists of 250 members, but the forum would like to recruit more community members from the estimated total number of 1 400 homes.

“We want everyone to act as ‘eyes and ears’ for the police and their neighbours,” van Rooyen added.

”Once that has been achieved, we trust that the criminals will have no choice but to stay away from the community.” – @>FanieFLK
