Mounted Unit helps to combat crime

Boksburg has become the East Rand Mounted Unit’s focus of attention, following a scourge of house break-ins in the city.

Capt Urian Diamonds of the unit said his members have recently joined local police stations in battling the crime spree.

“We are now making frequent patrols of Boksburg neighbourhoods, especially the most frequently hit spots, including Sunward Park, Parkdene, Boksburg North and others.

“Our unit is committed to a long term partnership with local police stations to prevent crime, rather than just respond to criminal activity after it has taken place,” said Diamonds.

He said that his unit has a plan in place to aid local police stations over the long-term to help ensure a safe and secure quality of life for all Boksburg residents.

“We have repeatedly proven our usefulness by the favourable results we have produced in the communities we serve.”

Diamonds believes the mounted units can help curb crime through visible policing.

“Alberton had the same problem, but we have managed to take the area back from the hands of criminals.

“It might be old fashioned policing, but mounted patrol units are a big weapon in the SAPS’s battle against crime.

“We are daily being utilised to patrol, or work, in areas targeted by criminals, not just in Boksburg, but all over Gauteng.”
