SONA: Government creates 850 000 jobs, aims for more

During his State of the Nation (Sona) address, last night, President Jacob Zuma said government has thus far created more than 850 000 work opportunities for young people through the Employment Tax Incentive programme.

Last year, during the introduction of the programme, he announced a target of six million work opportunities over five years directed mainly at the youth.

Zuma said the programme is progressing very well and that means “we are poised to meet the annual target of one million job opportunities”.

In addition he said: “Environmental programmes such as Working on Waste, Working for Wetlands, Working for Water and Working on Fire have created more than 30 000 work opportunities, and the target is to create more than 60 000 work opportunities during the next financial year.

Zuma also acknowledged that these are the times of a difficult economic climate.

He said the IMF revised the GDP growth forecasts for global economic growth in 2015 down to 3.5 per cent.

“Our ambition of achieving a growth target of five per cent by 2019 is at risk, because of the slow global growth as well as domestic constraints in energy, skills, transport and logistics among others.

“However, the situation is more promising on the jobs front. StatsSA recently released the employment figures for the last quarter of 2014, which shows that there are now 15.3 million people who are employed in South Africa.

“Our investment in youth employment is therefore paying off.”
