Proposed eviction’s failure relieves residents’ tension

Living Africa’s failure to execute the eviction order for the removal of about 10 000 occupants of the Angelo informal settlement, has defused the simmering tension among residents of the area.

Living Africa warned residents to vacate the area before or on February 1, or face evictions.

This came after the land owner, Living Africa Properties, sought a High Court order for the removal of the squatters.

A month prior to the D-day, the municipality told the Advertiser that its Human Settlement Department was aware of the looming evictions, adding that it had already organised alternative land for the people, should the evictions go ahead.

Residents, however, claimed that they had not been consulted about such a relocation plan.

According to one of the residents, Thomas Sibuyi, they were relieved when the ward councillor, Hillary Coke, visited Angelo on Sunday, February 1, to share the news that, for now, they will not be evicted,

The Advertiser is awaiting comment on the matter from Living Africa. – @FanieBoksburg
