‘Shameless thief’ caught stealing from police station

Police arrested a 24-year-old man - described as ‘daring shameless thief’ - after they caught him in the act of stealing seized alcohol from Reiger Park police station.

According to a spokesperson for the Reiger Park SAPS, Sgt Mashudu Phathela, police were carrying out an inspection when they caught the man exiting the storeroom carrying two crates full of beer.

The theft around 4am on Sunday, February 1.

Two more crates full of beer that had been taken from the storeroom were also found placed in the field outside the station.

The thief allegedly cut a hole through the outside fence to enter the premises before jumping the wall to gain access to the storeroom.

The man was charged with theft and faces additional charges, including malicious damage to property, business burglary and trespassing.

Phathela said investigators are trying to determine whether the suspect has links to two previous cases of burglaries whereby computers were stolen from the police station.

“We believe that the suspect was among a gang of thieves during the recent theft. They are pushing their luck by continuing to target the station,’ said Phathela.

On December 8 last year, daring thieves broke into an office at the Reiger Park SAPS and stole an office computer, belonging to the communication officer. This followed another theft of a computer at the station.

Phathela said in December they would step up security at the station to prevent a similar incident, but this has not deterred a thief to strike again in the midst of law enforcement. – @FanieBoksburg
