The man, who has not been identified, was hit at the intersection of Rondebult and Main Reef roads, close to Comet.

EMPD spokesperson Kobedi Mokheseng, confirmed the incident, adding that the fatal crash happened at about 8.30pm.

“The information we obtain from the scene is that the truck was heading north, while the cyclist was pedalling on Main Reef Road towards Germiston.

“The driver of the truck told police that he was driving through a green traffic light at the intersection, when he heard a loud bang from the side of his truck trailer, before noticing the bicycle lying on the ground,” said Mokheseng.

“The driver pulled over and called the emergency services.”

Paramedics from ER24 arrived, and certified the cyclist dead at the scene.

Upon arrival at the scene, the Advertiser found a gruesome sight with the cyclist having sustained multiple severe injuries.

The driver of the truck sustained no injuries.

Although police are still trying to obtain the identity of the deceased, the police received a possible tip-off that the bicycle belongs to a 40-year-old Malawian man, who normally pedals along the area daily.

Mokheseng said the truck driver was charged with culpable homicide and the matter is being investigated by the Boksburg North SAPS.

Half of the road was cordoned off as Emergency Services attended the scene.
