Faithful companion on the mend

A cross-Maltese which was recently saved after being knocked down by a car on Trichardts Road, sustained extensive injuries.

Initially, the dog was reported to have suffered a fractured head, but during the operation they discovered further damage to the leg and it had to be amputated.

She also has a fractured hip on one side.

The Advertiser published an article on January 9, stating that the vet was going to euthanise the dog within 24 hours if no one came forward to claim it.

An angel named Alta Grobbelaar came forward and offered to pay the dog’s medical bill which cost over R2 000.

Grobbelaar said though the dog is doing well, she can’t walk at the moment.

“When I put her on the grass, she crawled back into my arms as she discovered her leg is gone, and keeps on looking there to try and understand why she cannot stand.”

Grobbelaar said the dog must be kept still for a further three weeks in a crate due to the fact that she has a fractured hip on the one side and the amputation on the other side.

“If it was not for the fractured hip she would have already been walking by now.”

They are now managing her pain with medication.

Although the owner of the dog has been found, it will still be re-homed after being discharged from the hospital.

“We did find the owner, who is based at a home in Boksburg where he is recovering from an illness.

“I had a discussion with him as the gates are always open at this home, and the doggy can get out again in the future. She needs a lot of attention at the moment so we agreed that it would be better for her to be re-homed where she can be safe,” explained Grobbelaar.

Grobbelaar has already found a foster mom that can take care of her and, if she gets along with the cats in the home, she will stay there.

When she rescued the doggy, Grobbelaar initially named her Rusty.

“When we found her owner we discovered her name is actually Scrappy. But, because we are going to re-home her, and because of everything she has been through, her foster mommy suggested we change her name to Faith.

“So she is now Faith because of her faith in getting healthy.”

Grobbelaar saved the dog in her personal capacity.

She also supports an animal shelter in Pretoria North called Wollies Animal Project.

“I also try and help some of the other shelters as much as possible.”
