Stalwart Bertus De Langen dies at 68

Bertus De Langen, one of Boksburg’s best known citizens, lost his ongoing battle with cancer in the early hours of January 8.

De Langen was born in Holland on March 9, 1947.

His parents relocated to South Africa when he was very young and he attended Laerskool Concordia and Hoërskool Voortrekker.

On graduating from high school, De Langen decided to pursue a career in the banking industry, where he remained for 20 years.

He married Magdalena (Magda) Fourie on June 6, 1970, and they had two sons.

On leaving the banking world, De Langen and Magda, in partnership with some others, took over the running of Aida Boksburg and remained as dealer principal for the following 27 years.

As a stalwart member of the Boksburg community, he is described as a gentleman by the many who knew him.

He went into partnership with Denver Ramnath in 2003, having decided to take a back seat in the everyday running of the company and to spend more time on his other interest, property development.

In 2010 he sold the business outright to Ramnath, but stayed on in an advisory capacity.

He took partial retirement and he and Magda enjoyed the time travelling.

De Langen was known for his insatiable sense of humour and for both his unshakeable integrity and his impeccable ethics in all his dealings, on both a personal as well as a professional level.

His kindness and generosity were boundless and his wisdom was legendary, while his love of a great party and braai ensured a full and robust social life.

De Langen’s funeral service will be held at noon on Wednesday, January 14, at the Herformde Kerk, corner of Langenhoven and Slater streets, Parkrand, Boksburg.

Bert De Langen is survived by Magda, his sons, Ronnie and Riaan, his two grandchildren, Xander and Riandie, as well as all his family members, colleagues and friends.
