Curburne suspect to stand trial

It has been reported that the man accused of killing Reiger Park toddler Cuburne van Wyk will stand trial in the High Court in Johannesburg in April.

Katlego Mpoku, otherwise known as “Chicken”, allegedly kidnapped and killed the little boy in August last year.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, however, has finally decided to prosecute “Chicken”.

The case, which was referred on Monday to the High Court, follows several delays during previous appearances. Mpoku last appeared in the court on December 17.

During the December court appearance, the court was told the Director of Public Prosecutions needed more time to investigate the case as new evidence has emerged that has to be considered.

Van Wyk’s body was found on a mine dump soon after he went missing.

The decision to proceed with the trail came as a relief to the family, after the National Prosecuting Authority last year withdrew charges against a man accused of killing four-year-old Taegrin Morris, also from Reiger Park.

Taegrin died after being dragged behind the hijacked vehicle of his parents.

Charges were also dropped against a man accused of killing soccer star Senzo Meyiwa.
