Twenty two killed in Ekurhuleni road accidents

A total of 22 people were killed in road accidents across Ekurhuleni over the festive season.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said the 22 people who died included eight pedestrians, three motor cyclists, seven drivers and four passengers.

“The eight pedestrians included a seven-year-old girl who was run over in Tembisa and a female passenger who died on the N3 highway southbound near Leondale,” said Kgasago.

Kasago said the figures were recorded between December 1 and New Year’s Day.

During that period the EMPD also held highly intensified operations, adopting a no-nonsense approach to irresponsible drivers putting innocent road users’ lives at risk.

The operations yielded a total of 418 arrests, of which 211 were for those driving while under the influence of alcohol.

“The drunken driving arrests included that of a driver who was responsible for one of the 22 fatalities that occurred – the driver ran over a pedestrian on a sidewalk in the Germiston CBD,” said Kgasago.

He said a total of 130 were arrested for speeding, including a driver in a BMW sedan driving at 213km/h on R21 highway in Olifantsfontein.

“Seventy seven other arrests were for various crimes including possession of hijacked vehicles, dealing in narcotics and a drunk metro police impostor in full uniform soliciting bribes from motorists in Katlehong,” said Kgasago.

A further six men were nabbed for drug dealing in Boksburg, Germiston and Brakpan receptively, and were found in possession of Cat, crystal meth, dagga and mandrax valued at over R200 000.
