Year in review: Toddler murders, vandalism and Madiba magic

Here is a summary of news that made our papers throughout 2014 (July to September):

July

* It was a dark July for residents of Reiger Park. Toddler Taegrin Morris (4) is killed when dragged behind his parents hijacked VW Golf. The killing causes an uproar in the community, with residents calling for the death penalty. By November, Thamsanqa Twala appeared in court over the murder, but the case was withdrawn in court.

* July will always be remembered when the legacy of Madiba is celebrated on his birthday, July 18. For the past five years, on Mandela Day, millions have volunteered 67 minutes of their time for the common good to mark Mandela’s 67 years of activism for SA’s freedom. 

* Juan Venter het ’n nagmerrie beleef toe hy erg brandwonde opgedoen het op sy linkerarm, knieë en drie toontjies, skaars twee dae na sy geboorte, weens ’n elektriese kombers wat op hom in die hospitaal gelos is.

* Ashley Rutherford is voted as the new councillor for ward 92, after former ward councillor Graham Gersbach was elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

August

* Following the death of Taegrin Morris in Reiger Park, the community is once again left in shock when Cuburne van Wyk’s partially burnt body is found at a mine dump in Reiger . Katlego Phoku, otherwise known as ‘Chicken’, is arrested. Court proceedings continue.

* Die Volkspele-beweging is 100-jaar-oud. In Boksburg, vier die Inspanlaer die eeufees met ’n volkspele saamtrek. 

* Striking postal workers damage the mail delivery depot in Boksburg.

It was again a year of strikes, with the Postal strike carrying on for months. Dissatisfied workers even vandalised the depot in Boksburg.

*A respected Boksburg widow and building contractor, Delien O’Dell, lost R2-million worth of goods 
when her house caught fire. The house fire caused major damage to the house and basically all her belongings. O’Dell is a great lover of antiques and nearly her whole house consisted of old furniture with precious significance.

* New Natalspruit Hospital of 821 beds opens in Vosloorus. The old building in Kathlehong is set for demolition.

* A foetus dumped in a bucket toilet in Jerusalem informal settlement is discovered.

* The two Boksburg North officers, who were filmed taking bride and performing a sexual act in Boksburg, are convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment. 

* Ngawethu Ka-Siphiwo is crowned the new Miss Commonwealth South Africa for 2014/15 at Gold Reef City.

* Hendrika van Staden from Boksburg competes in the finals of Mrs SA.

September 

* Laerskool Baanbreker in Parkrand is die spervuur nadat die Organisasie vir Godsdienste-Onderrig en Demokrasie die skool wil verbied om Christelike gebruike uit te leef. Baanbreker is een van ses skole in ’n saak waar die voorsitter van dié organisasie die hoogeregshof in Johannesburg vra om die skole van enige vorm van Christelike verwysing te verbied. 

* Fantastic, established bands and newby-bands all comes together at Parkrand Primary School to kickstart the Battle of the Bands, co-hosted by the Advertiser. Not Bob and Friend, a pair from Pretoria, clinches the title. The competition was intended to seek out those with the talent to make you gasp with excitement as they play original and cover tunes. 

* Waaghalse Enrico Schoeman en André de Kock van Boksburg verbeter hul eie wêreldrekord deur ’n vuurtonnel van 120.4m op ’n motorfiets met ’n sywaentjie te jaag. Hulle was ook die houers van die vorige rekord van 103.09m.

* Five tons of abalone is seized during a raid in Van Dyk Park.

* A fire crew from Ekurhuleni comes under attack while trying to extinguish a blaze in Delmore informal settlement. It appears the attackers were angry that the emergency crew took so long to respond to the fire.

* Fire causes damage to seven rooms at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre. The rooms were situated in a hotel block undergoing renovations.

* A helicopter crash claims the life of Theuns van As (19). The Beyers Park resident worked for Matrix as an air tracker.

* Nthabiseng Seleho is found on the back seat of her burning car. Those arrested included her fiancé and her ex-husband. Police investigation found that Seleho was delivering more than R300 000 worth of jewellery to the suspects’ house in Boksburg.
