A topsy turvy year of violence, load-shedding and strikes

2014 in Boksburg will be sadly remembered for numerous tragedies, with a sprinkling of good news stories.

Top of the list includes the murders of toddlers Taegrin Morris and Cuburne van Wyk in Reiger Park. The country also mourned the death of Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa who was shot dead in Vosloorus in a robbery.

It was year that the war on drugs waged on, while taxi violence (specifically between the Vosloorus and Reiger Park Taxi Associations) claimed several lives, most notably Andy Khoza, who was the chairman of the Reiger Park Taxi Association.
Nationally, the ANC took the general elections, with the EFF making significant inroads, thus, breaking down ANC’s stronghold in Gauteng. A total of 25.3-million registered to vote in this year’s elections.

It was also a year that the E-toll system remained standing, that Eskom continued struggling to provide power while Rand Water experienced a crisis to supply water to Gauteng for several weeks.

It is also customary for South Africa to endure numerous strikes, the most significant being the strike in the Platinum Belt that last more than four months, causing unrepairable economic damage.

But then there was also the Post Office strike, which affected the local and national community.

There were fortunately also highlights from our local ‘stars’, such as Earl Gregory landing a part in the musical theatre production titled Cats, while Ngawethu Ka-Siphiwo was crowned the new Miss Commonwealth South Africa for 2014/15 at Gold Reef City.

Jennifer Williamson and Shannon Roscher were both Miss Earth finalists, while Rozanne Meyer (28) was one of the top five finalists for the South African Bachelorette of the Year.

The Advertiser will publish four posts to highlight the year that has been.
