Police neglect basic procedures in the Taegrin Morris case

Even though court did not give reasons for the withdrawal of charges against Thamsanqa Twala, accused of being involved in the murder of Taegrin Morris, it has subsequently emerged that the police officers, who conducted the identification parade, allegedly had not followed a range of basic procedures.

This is according to one of the Reiger Park community leaders Hein April, who allegedly insisted on getting clarity on the matter from the senior prosecutor, Adv Henk Strydom.

As soon as court proceedings ended, the Morris supporters in the public gallery started screaming and pointing fingers at Twala’s mother, the magistrate and the prosecutor shouting “nee man genoeg is genoeg” (“no man enough is enough”).

They went outside the courtroom and began demonstrating, while demanding that the State explain the reasons for the withdrawal.
The Morris family were also present.

The suspect’s family maintains that Twala is innocent, adding that they have enough evidence to prove that Twala is not involved in the crime.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Twala’s mother in law, her name known to the Advertiser, accused the police of carrying out their investigation clumsily.

“Because of the threats made by Reiger Park residents, we are now living in fear. We have become the victims, because of the police’s incompetency,” says Twala’s mother in law.

She also stated that her family members also have great sympathy for the Morris family.

“We are also praying to God that the police find those responsible for the killing of the innocent boy.”

SAPS and Ekurhuleni metro police maintained a strong presence in and around the court, as they did on November 7, during the second court appearance.

Taegrin died when his parents’ VW Golf was hijacked in Reiger Park in July. Three armed men apparently approached the vehicle in which Morris, his sister and parents were travelling in, and ordered the family out.

The little boy was caught in his seatbelt and dragged along the road as the hijackers drove off.

The car was later found abandoned outside the Municipal-owned dilapidated building at 39 Market Street.
