Shots fired in attempted cash-in-transit heist on Atlas Road

One man was injured in a shoot-out on Atlas Road, last night, in an attempted cash-in-transit heist.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said three men, travelling in a Mercedes Benz vehicle and a truck, took the Atlas Road off-ramp.

They drove the vehicles on either side of a G4S cash delivery vehicle and, according to Sekele, the truck rammed the security vehicle, but was unable to overturn it, after the first robot after the off-ramp.

Three men, two of whom were armed with guns, then emerged from the two vehicles and opened fire on the two occupants of the G4S van, who ran away from their vehicle.

“Two of the robbers shot at them and a third man, who had a hammer, smashed the windows of the G4S van,” said Sekele.

She added that the robbers were unable to gain entry into the vehicle and fled in the truck and car, having failed to make off with any money.

A Saber Tactical security member, who was on Atlas Road, was struck in the hand by stray bullets.

Saber Tactical director Rocky Schaper said the reaction officer, who he did not want to named, drove himself to hospital.

He said the officer is in a stable condition.

Police found explosives on the scene and later discovered the truck in Springs.

A case of attempted murder and attempted cash-in-transit robbery has been opened.

No one has been arrested.
