A sad loss to local sport

Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa died when a bullet hit him in his back when he jumped to protect his Afro-Pop singer and girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, on Sunday night, October 26.

The incident took place at Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus, where they were held at gun-point around 8pm.

Meyiwa was shot in the back and the bullet came out through his chest.

He was declared dead on arrival at the Botshelong Hospital.

According to Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malubane two guys entered the house and demanded cellphones, money and other valuables.

One suspect remained outside. The three fled on foot after the shooting.

Orlando Pirates club chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza, said in a statement: “This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it – to Senzo’s family, especially his children, to Orlando Pirates and to the nation.”

“We can assure South Africans that we will do all we can to bring Meyiwa’s killers to book,” says Lieut-Gen Solomon Makgale.

The death of the national football team captain is the second tragedy to hit South African sport within three days after former world 800-metre athletics champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi died Friday in a car crash.

The Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele has reacted with shock at the news of Meyiwa’s death.

“This is quite sad. This young man’s soccer career was blossoming. He was proving to be a major asset for both Bafana and Pirates.

“His prowess was clearly confirmed when he was given the captain’s arms band both at Pirates and Bafana,” Gungubele said.
