Pay back R2.4m! Suspects sentenced in abalone case

Jinhai Xu, Jieqiano Liang and Wurong He, who were found in possession of abalone, pleaded guilty in the Vosloorus Magistrates Court on October 15.

A witness from Marine and Coastal was requested to testify against the men.

The court sentenced each of the accused to R800 000 or two years imprisonment.

A combined R2.4-million must be paid.

On September 14, the men were found in possession of wet and dry abalone, to the value of approximately R3-m, in Van Dyk Park.

This is the second major raid in Ekurhuleni after more than 50 000 units of abalone were confiscated in a bust on another drying facility, in Rynfield, Benoni, in July.

During that raid, one Chinese national, two Mozambicans and a Malawian citizen were arrested. – @CarmenBoksburg
