N12 Accident: Lawyers withdraw from the case

Lawyers for the driver of the truck involved in the N12 accident which left four people dead have withdrawn from the case.

According to Sowetan Live, “Gerhard Louw and Deon van Staden told the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court they were unsure whether they would continue representing him after Thursday’s appearance.”

Louw was quoted by the newspaper, “We have not received instructions to proceed.”

The 44-year-old accused was seen covering his head with a jacket as the court was in session. He is facing four culpable homicide charges and one reckless and negligent driving charge.

The accused told the court he would appoint his own lawyers for his bail application.
Louw and Van Staden then immediately withdrew from the case.

The driver is believed to have had a previous conviction of culpable homicide.
On Tuesday October 14, the accused drove into 50 vehicles on the N12 near the Voortrekker offramp in Alberton.
