Still no answers from the metro about Angelo evictions

As the Angelo informal settlement’s eviction date is drawing closer, causing uneasy feelings among residents, the Department of Human Settlement in Ekurhuleni has yet to reach an agreement on how to tackle the possible crisis, likely to be caused by the evictions.

The Advertiser approached the metro more than three weeks ago and requested comment on this issue, but the department has not yet answered the relevant questions posed.

However, during a press conference between the Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele and Caxton East Rand and South editors, the issue of Angelo was again raised.

Gungubele promised the publication that he would look into the matter and that the paper will receive response this week.

Should the evictions go ahead, more than 10 000 people could be left homeless.

According to the residents, government has known about these impending evictions for years.

“The municipality must not tell us that there isn’t enough time to satisfy our demands before the D-day, because we have been for all these years begging them to buy this land and build us RDP houses.

“They should have acted long before the owner decided to evict us,” says a community leader.

Failure to meet their demands, the residents warned that they will defend their homes with anti-eviction protests, and indicated that they are intending to apply for an urgent court interdict to stop their evictions. – @FanieBoksburg
