Shooting erupts at Boksburg taxi rank

Gunfire erupted outside the busy Boksburg Taxi Rank, located at the corner of Trichardst Road and Leeuwpoort Street, Boksburg CBD, on October 2.

Gunmen in what appears to be four kombis and a car, allegedly opened fire on the people at the taxi rank this morning.

According to the police two rounds were fired in the incident.

Police responded soon after the report about a shooting in progress.

The shooters sped off when the police arrived, driving towards the Boksburg prison, prompting a police pursuit.

The two police officers from the Boksburg SAPS, Const Kwena Mothokwa and Const Thokozani Ntshalintshali, managed to catch 10 of the alleged shooters along Barry Marais Road.

The high speed pursuit ended in a multi-vehicle accident crash that injured a driver of VW Polo and one of the accused shooters.

Three kombis were involved in the crash. The fourth kombi was recovered by the police.

No injuries were reported at the taxi rank.

The firearms were not recovered, while the occupants in the other getaway vehicle also managed to escape.

The incident prompted the shut-down of both lanes of Trichardst Road and the northbound of Barry Marais.

Police could not yet confirm if this is taxi violence-related, but investigations into the incident continue.
