Various crimes prosecuted – court news

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrates Court:

n Thomas Phelembe, from Joe Slovo informal settlement, appeared in court on a charge of theft.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on September 23, to 18 months imprisonment.

On August 30, the accused stole 12 spoons and four sets of forks, to the value of R944.84, from Checkers.

He had previous convictions of theft from June 2008, January 2010, March 2013 and August 2013.

Magistrate Ryan van Harte presided over the matter, and Busi Mafokeng appeared on behalf of the State.

* Maqhawe Ntuli (24), from Kwatemba, appeared in court on a charge of theft.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on September 23, to three years imprisonment of which one year was suspended for five years.

On September 5, the accused stole a cellphone to the value of R1 200, from Suzanna Steyn.

He had previous convictions of theft from June 2008, February 2010, June 2010, September 2010, November 2010 and July 2011.

Magistrate Ryan van Harte presided over the matter, and Busi Mafokeng appeared on behalf of the State.

* Austen Memela (52), from Vosloorus, appeared in court on a charge of theft.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on September 19, to 18 months imprisonment suspended for five years.

On May 26, the accused stole metal sheets, to the value of R19 099, from Segal Metals.

Magistrate Emmanuelle Magampa presided over the matter, and Angeline Mooiman appeared on behalf of the State.

n Justice Hove (21), a Zimbabwean citizen, appeared in court on a charge of attempted theft. He pleaded guilty, was found guilty and sentenced on September 22, to R5 000 or 15 months imprisonment.

On August 18, the accused attempted to steal radioactive mine pipes from DRD Mining Industries.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the matter, and Themba Maluleke appeared on behalf of the State.

* Louisa Nhantumbu (46), from Comet, appeared in court on a charge of dealing in liquor.

He pleaded not-guilty on October 24, 2013, was found guilty and sentenced on September 19, to R3 000 or six months imprisonment.

On March 17, 2013, the accused was found unlawfully dealing in liquor.

He had a previous conviction for dealing in liquor from February 2011.

Magistrate Emmanuelle Magampa presided over the matter, and Angeline Mooiman appeared on behalf of the State.

* Patrick Mgobeni (52), from Germiston, appeared in court on a charge of rape.

He pleaded not-guilty on August 8, was found guilty and sentenced on September 22, to 10 years imprisonment.

On March 30, 2013, the accused raped a 23-year-old woman. He was linked to the crime through DNA.

Magistrate Sijren Harichand presided over the matter, and Leon Naude appeared on behalf of the State.

* Tsepho Matli (26) and Oscar More (23), both from Dawn Park, appeared in court on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property.

They pleaded not-guilty and were found guilty on September 4, and sentenced on September 22. Matli was sentenced to R5 000 or 15 months imprisonment, and More was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment of which nine months was suspended for five years.

On July 31 the men were found in possession of two pot sets, a boiler, a coffee-maker and one set of glasses.

More had previous convictions of being in possession of suspected stolen property from January 2012, and possession of drugs from March 2013.
