Expo to highlight the feasibility of home-schooling

In South Africa parents have the legal choice whether to home-school their children or not.

If you are new to home-schooling, here are some easy steps describing how to start:

* If your child is in a school, take your child out of the school. It is advisable to inform the school that you have decided to home-school your child, and request a transfer certificate.

* The SA Schools Act requires parents to register their children for education at home. To do this one needs to send an application form to the Gauteng Department of Education. Together with the application form, one needs to provide a motivational letter detailing reasons why receiving an education at home will be in the best interest of your child.

* Educate yourself on home education or attend workshops on home education.

* Choose a home-schooling approach and curriculum that suits the needs of you and your child.

* Join home-schooling support and discussion groups and interact with other home-schooling parents.

Home-schooling is no longer something practised by religious fundamentalists; it is a real and accessible option to ensuring that your children receive a high standard of education at an affordable price.

So whether you are looking for products and services to improve your child’s performance at school, or you are looking at different education options or whether you are just curious, the Association for Home Schooling invites you to pay the JHB Home School Expo a visit.

The expo will take place on September 27 at the NG Church in Witfield.

There is also a complimentary seminar on the day, and while some of the topics deal with home- schooling in particular, there are also lectures that deal with childhood development.

The expo offers complementary child-minding services for children between the ages of being potty-trained to 12 years, as well as a tea garden with refreshments.
