An electrical danger to the church

It has taken a long while, but it seems that, at last, the metro will be taking responsibility for a tension cable hanging between two power lines, said to be carrying 22 000 volts, on a church property in Freeway Park.

The matter has not been attended to in more than seven months.

This is according to Past Neville Robinson, who has been reporting the cable running through his property to both Eskom and the metro, since February, this year.

“We are talking about Eskom’s overhead power lines, which are above ground and are held high up in the air by huge steel poles, commonly called pylons,” says Robinson.

”These power lines carry 22 000 volts, and they supply electricity to the municipality’s sub-stations.

“The tension cable has broken and is lying between the two power lines, still attached on one side and going to the earth/ground. This is extremely dangerous.”

Robinson says that officials from Eskom and the metro have contacted him for more details.

“For a long time they both kept telling me that it is not their problem,” he explains.

”Every time I have phoned they have given me reference numbers, but nothing ever gets done; I am so fed up.

”If someone dies, let it be on his head not mine.”

A frustrated Robinson points out that he has instructed staff members, congregation members and children who are there on Sundays to steer clear of the area.

“Fortunately the tension wire is lying on our property and is not directly accessible to the general public,” he says.

”This situation is highly dangerous and the amount of electricity going through these cables will cause someone to literally explode.”

Ekurhuleni zone manager Mihla Khumalo says an investigation was conducted at the premises.

“It was discovered that the line in question is our 88kV line, and not 22kV as indicated. It had a broken earth wire which will be fixed today (Tuesday, August 26)”. -@TumeloBoksburg
