Rocky cemetery conditions causes heartbreak

It’s been four months since baby Rodgers has been buried at the new Boksburg cemetery, and still there is no tombstone at his grave, due to the rocky conditions of the cemetery’s CC section for children.

Miche Swarts, mother of the deceased, has reported it to the Ekurhuleni metro, but no improvements have been made yet.

“It is heartbreaking to go to my child’s (Logan) grave – it looks bad. I am really fed up now – we would like to get his tombstone done, but we can’t do anything until the area has been cleaned and his grave is filled up properly.”

There used to be a big hole behind her baby’s grave, but on the Advertiser’s visit to the cemetery, the hole had been filled up.

The hole was allegedly dug to use the sand so that his grave could be filled.

On the visit to the cemetery, it was noted that some people even started using the smaller rocks to indicate where their beloved ones were buried.

When lodging her complaint, Swarts was told that special machinery is needed to remove the rocks.

According to the metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, they are aware of the complaint.

“The cemetery is rocky and, therefore, it is not possible to remove all the rocks as they are part of the landscape. As a natural feature, the rocks will not be removed.

“It is a norm that stonemasons remove all obstructions from the grave before erecting tombstones.” – @IschkeBoksburg
