Final notice charged erroneously by metro

In June this year, Hannes Erasmus received a final notice, which he says falsely accused him of not paying his municipal account.

Erasmus claims that his account was always paid in advance and so he made an inquiry with the metro.

“After spending one hour and making 39 phone calls to all the numbers listed on the notice, my calls remained unanswered. This prompted me to rather lodge a query through the E-Siyakhokha website,” he explains.

After almost a month of no feedback, Erasmus then received a municipal account where the missing payment was now reflecting.

“As an added bonus, an amount of R87.78 was debited from my account for the trouble that the metro had to go through in order to deliver a final notice. Again this was queried, and after another month, the charge for the final notice was still not reversed.”

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says Erasmus made a payment on May 30 by means of an EFT.

“Due to an administrative problem on the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s side, this payment was updated onto the applicable account on June 17. However, a final notice was rendered on that same day. The fee in respect of this final notice has since been credited,” says Gadebe.
