Garbage collectors create a pigsty

It has been a few months since the implementation of the wheelie bins in Ekurhuleni, with one of the main reasons being to avoid littering.

However, an Impala Park resident is fed up with the manner garbage collectors handles the refuse bags and the bins in question.

On numerous occasions, Jaco du Toit, has witnessed how they have spilled the rubbish from the refuse bags in the streets while dumping it in the garbage truck.

“It looks as if a dog ripped the black bags open and dragged it across the street,” says du Toit.

He adds that the collectors put the wrong wheelie bins at the wrong houses, but yet, you are not allowed to mark your bins.

Du Toit said he is very frustrated with the metro.

“It’s a shame that they (the metro) exploit people like this – we are paying for the wheelie bins and waste removal. The garbage collectors are getting paid to collect the rubbish.

“I am not going to allow people who are too lazy to do their work to intimidate me.”

According to metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, the municipality is aware of the issue and is in the process of resolving it.

“The depot manager responsible, will address the matter with the supervisors and staff.”

Gadebe says the metro is also in the process of employing more supervisors to prevent incidents of this nature from occurring.

With regards to residents not allowed to mark their wheelie bins, Gadebe states that the metro is not opposed to residents doing so with house numbers.

“However, we request that it is done neatly and professionally or with illuminating stickers to resolve the issues.”

He says that residents do not pay for the wheelie bins, but for the collection service.

“The bins are the property of the metro, that is why residents are not allowed to take their bins with them when they relocate,” says Gadebe. – @IschkeBoksburg
