DA calls on mayor to suspend city manager

The DA in Ekurhuleni has called on the mayor to place city manager, Khaya Ngema, on suspension until the findings of a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) investigation into the irregular awarding of a R31-million tender are made known.

Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele says Ekurhuleni has referred the issue of the alleged irregular appointment of business consulting company to the SIU.

“As a municipality we are deeply concerned about the allegations which we view to be very serious. It is for this reason that we have decided to rope in the SIU to assist us to get to the bottom of this matter.

“Our view is that the completion and the outcome of the SIU investigation will assist us to determine the way forward regarding the matter,” adds Gungubele.

A report by Gobodo Forensic Investigative Accounting states that the municipality had already paid Qbit R6-m of the R31-m contract to conduct the institutional review for the city.

Ngema is allegedly under investigation by the public protector, Thuli Madonsela, in connection with allegations of gross irregularities related to the awarding of contracts worth R109-m to fix roads and pavements. – @TumeloBoksburg
