Council meeting sheds light on Ekurhuleni issues

The monthly Ekurhuleni council meeting held at the Germiston Council Chamber on July 31, started on a somber note as condolences were sent out to the Morris family following Taegrin’s (4) death.

Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele started his address with the message ‘Enough is Enough’, saying Taegrin had become synonymous with the campaign led by the municipality and endorsed by the province, which aims to rid communities of, among others, all forms of crime, drugs and substance abuse.

“Taegrin may have left us too soon but one thing is for sure, his death has marked the beginning of the transformation of Reiger Park.

“The community has come out in support of our campaign to drive criminals out of their area. They clearly demonstrated their commitment on Sunday when they participated in the arrest of a 24-year-old man who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl in the area a few days ago,” said the mayor.

Gungubele said that the Enough is Enough campaign aims to address the general socio-economic development and challenges of the minority communities.

On another note, he noted that the municipality’s credit rating had demonstrated good and healthy financial performance.

“According to rating company Moody’s Investor Service, Ekurhuleni’s credit rating reflects a relatively large and diversified economic base, strong liquidity and traditionally conservative approach to financial management.”

Gungubele said a total of 10km of Non-Motorised Transport infrastructure (pedestrian walkways and cyclist paths) had already been constructed in Kempton Park, Tembisa and Rondebult, and two contractors had been appointed for the construction to the value R270-million.

He closed by saying the city would celebrate the role of women in August through various initiatives including workshops, exhibitions and campaigns.

In response, the DA pointed out that Cape Town was the only metro with a clean audit and that in Ekurhuleni power outages were the order of the day.

Other issues raised by the DA were:

* That the party would introduce a barometer of failed projects in order to correct them.

* Post 1994 there has been a moral degeneration.

* The ANC is trashing the City with posters.

* Very little is being done to bring wrongdoers to book.

* Power outages, poor service delivery, shortage of fuel, illegal taverns and government buildings which are not being maintained.

* Enormous amount of fraud and corruption that needs to be dealt with strongly.

Other parties which responded were the IFP that pointed out that they were worried about the high unemployment rate.

The PAC called for a reshuffling and said focus is needed to to decide on measures that can be taken to move forward.

The ACDP said prisons were too comfortable and perpetrators were finding a second home behind bars.

From the ANC, one councillor pointed out that crime was not a political party problem, but a societal issue that needed to be addressed.

Other matters raised were jobs and tenders benefiting people outside of Ekurhuleni, illegal connections and theft of electricity, bad debt and billions being owed to the municipality. @TumeloBoksburg
