Local expo to expose artists with contemporary flare

The Sunward Art Expo is an art exhibition to be hosted by a new company named Kinetics Design and Exhibitions (Kinetics).

It will showcase young and upcoming South African artists with contemporary flare who express their own content in a free form composition that will please the viewer’s visual experience like never before.

Kinetics is a company that focuses on hosting a series of art exhibitions that will be used to raise funds for charity organisations that Kinetics supports, such as Meals on Wheels, which provides food and clothing to the needy and is totally dependent on donations.

The aim of Kinetics is to participate in growing the already growing value of South African art and artists.

By giving the young and upcoming artists recognition, Kinetics also helps them to make a living from their art works.

“The theme of the (Sunward) art expo is ‘Strangers to the soil’, which highlights South African youth that are part of a pop culture in a westernised society and having been Africans who seem not to be inclined towards the African way, let alone taking interest in our past,” says Comfort Lebese.

“This ‘new age generation’, therefore, becomes ‘strangers to the soil’.”

Lebese is looking for paintings that depict African landscapes, people and images that will evoke the viewer’s thoughts to wonder.

“I want the audience to take a journey through South Africa’s past, present and possibly its future, all through the painters own interpretation – not confined to what we know as history – a bit abstract if you will.

“I also seek to incorporate sculptures in the form of glass work, brass, wood and/or clay moulding (pottery) to create a good variety and interesting collection of work for the audience.”

In order for the artists to participate in this event, an entry fee of R100 per artwork is required.

Site installation will start from July 31 and end on August 6.

It is during this period that artists should submit the artworks to the venue.

Apart from offering artists the exposure and recognition they need, Kinetics can also be referred to as an ‘artist incubator’.

The upcoming art exhibition will also be a juried event where a panel of independent judges will select five to 10 artists (or more), who will be sponsored by Kinetics to enter the Thami Mnyele art competition with prize winnings of up to R30 000.

These artists will also form part of Kinetics and will be given first priority in future events that will be hosted by Kinetics, depending on their style and professionalism – even earning themselves solo exhibitions under Kinetics.

The opening of the art exhibition is on Friday, August 8, at 6pm until 9pm and will run on August 9 and 10 from noon until 6pm.
