A family member used to look after the alleged attacker

Speaking outside the Reiger park police station during the community protest last Monday, a member of the Morris family said the family had recognised one of the hijackers as being someone the family used to look after in the past.

The young boy’s aunt, Debra Boards, said the family frequently gave one of the alleged hijackers hot food and clothing in the past.

“I used to give this child, who has been brought into questioning food. I gave him clothes and I helped him,” says Boards.

She says when there was nothing for him, she gave him money to go and buy himself bread.

She also questioned the actions of those who put in the order for vehicles to be stolen.

“They take the cars and they take them to the black locations where they go and strip them. Another couple from the church I attend was also hijacked. Those people identified the same guy (who is being questioned).

“When the photo of him was sent to us, my sister’s daughter said this is the man who took my baby! This is the man that took my child!

“So how do we feel? We must suffer, we must go through this things.”

She says the hijackers live in double stories, which they don’t even sleep in, because they have money to do everything. They pay our children nothing, but they destroy their lives (the children) with drugs.

“That’s what they are doing in this Reiger Park. So what I’m suggesting, is that police take actions to go to their houses (of the criminals) and arrest them.”

She also had strong words for those responsible for the hijacking of the family vehicle on Saturday night, July 19.

“Why didn’t you just take the car? Why did you have to take our child? I’m sick and tired. This has to stop, it really hurts. They (hijackers) don’t know how it feels. If you are a mother you will feel it, because nobody wants her children to die like that,” she said emotionally.

During the interview with Boards, the large number of people who gathered with her were heard saying that they want to know who is responsible for the hijacking.

The four-year-old Taegrin Morris was killed after his family was hijacked during a visit to the boy’s grandmother on Saturday night, July 19.

The suspects allegedly sped off while Teagrin’s mother Chantel Morris was still trying to unfasten her son’s seatbelt.

Police spokesperson Col Noxolo Khweza, confirmed that the police are questioning a man in connection with the hijacking and subsequent death of the Delmore boy.

The man remains in police custody but has been moved to a different location.

Last Monday, residents spent the whole day protesting outside the Reiger Park police station demanding justice and threatening to find and kill the hijackers themselves if police failed to arrest them.

Police are now offering a R100 000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the hijackers.
