Makeshift coal stove leads to death

A man was found dead in in his home in Vosloorus on Thursday, July 10, after what the EMS says was a carbon- monoxide poisoning.

According to Natasha Belhaj from the EMS, the call was received as a house fire but fire engine crews were cancelled prior to arriving.

“Our PRV (Southern Region) and ambulance from Vosloorus attended to the incident where one male was declared dead.

“One woman was very critical and flown to hospital by helicopter, while two more women also in a serious condition were transported to the Tambo Memorial Hospital,” says Belhaj.

Belhaj says it appears that the family was sleeping with a fire ‘imbawula’ (make-shift coal stove made out of a large tin with holes on the sides) burning in the house and were overcome by carbon-monoxide fumes.
