DA speaks out against shack fire

The DA has expressed shock and sadness with regard to the incident that occurred in Holomisa, Windmill Park, where two children died in a shack fire on Saturday, June 21.

Five hours after the incident had been reported to Emergency Services, there was still no ambulance or fire truck on site.

The DA’s Clr Tsholofelo Motshidi says that until all settlements have been electrified and roads are made accessible to emergency vehicles, tragedies like this will continue to happen.

“As a mother of young children myself, I am heartbroken to hear of the two young lives lost,” she adds.

“I am equally sorry that responses from the Human Settlements member of the mayoral committee, Queen Duba, confirms that this area will not be electrified in the foreseeable future.”

Motshidi says the metro has no immediate plans for the settlement, and relocation of the people living there is in the early planning stages and roughly three years away.

“There will be no attempt to formalise the settlement in the interim, as the land is owned by the Public Works Department and earmarked for a proposed highway,” adds Motshidi.
