Fine or imprisonment for stealing nappies

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrates Court:

* Uzane Francis (21), from Reiger Park, appeared in court on a charge of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and escaping.

He pleaded guilty, was found guilty, and sentenced on June 9, to R6 000 or six months imprisonment, suspended for five years for assault and six months imprisonment, suspended for five years, for escaping.

On January 26, the accused assaulted Joey Curtis Joseph by hitting him with a glass, which broke and cut him.

On February 25 the accused escaped from custody.

Magistrate Emmanuelle Magampa presided over the matter, and Angeline Mooiman appeared on behalf of the State.

* Sithabiso Mphuti (35), from Midrand, and Nontobeko Ntshangase (24), from Elandsfontein, appeared in court on a charge of theft.

They pleaded guilty, were found guilty, and sentenced on June 11, to R6 000 or six months imprisonment, of which R3 000 or three months imprisonment was suspended for five years.

On May 20 the men stole Centrum multivitamins, to the value of R1 521.94, from Pick n Pay.

Magistrate Ryan van Harte presided over the matter, and Busi Mafokeng appeared on behalf of the State.

* Jack Masinga (26) appeared in court on a charge of house break-in with the intent to steal.

He pleaded guilty and was found guilty on May 22, and sentenced on June 12 to three years imprisonment.

On February 20, the accused broke into a house and stole a plasma TV, to the value of approximately R10 000.

He had a previous conviction of house break-in from 2013.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided over the matter, and Khato Ranwedzi appeared on behalf of the State.

* Themba Buthelezi (37), from Katlehong, appeared in court on a charge of theft.

He pleaded guilty, and was found guilty on May 15, and sentenced on June 17 to R2 000 or six months imprisonment, suspended for five years.

On April 29, the accused stole a packet of nappies, to the value of R199.99, from Pick n Pay.

He had previous convictions of possession of drugs from 2005, 2006 and 2011.
