Tapping into young peoples potential

Youth development organisation Potential Tappers, along with Malherbe Rigg and Ranwell (MRR) attorneys, recently handed over 10 computers to Etwatwa High School in Wattville.

According to Potential Tappers founding member Sizwe Sibiya, the organisation primarily aims to raise an intelligent and purpose-driven generation.

Sibiya says he recently learned that Etwatwa High School had been scammed by a person who deceived them into believing he was a computer technician and instead stole parts from the computers he was supposed to fix.

“As a result, the school was forced to cater for over 500 learners with only 30 computers. Potential Tappers then approached MRR to see if they could help. MRR initially donated four computers and a couple of days later, called us to collect six more to give to the school,” explains Sibiya.

Sibiya says Potential Tappers aims to tap into young people’s potential and has partnered with the school to assist learners to obtain better results, to become better citizens and to strive for success despite the hardships they face.

Sibiya adds that they are striving to reduce and hopefully totally eradicate teenage pregnancies in the next five years in Wattville, Benoni and surrounding East Rand townships.

“We give the learners at the school tutoring services, career guidance, motivational talks and life coaching.

“Life coaching is aimed primarily at the Grade 8’s and Grade 9’s, with the idea of building relationships with the children that will progress with them through high school and into tertiary institutions,” he says.

Sibiya says the organisation is made up of seven members, Mpho Mofokeng, Simphiwe Sekoati, Mpho Ledwaba, Sibusiso Gamane, Mandla Mavimbela and Tshepo Radebe, who voluntarily give of their time.

“Once the child attains his or her qualification, support will still be there whether the child wants to seek employment or start a business, and whatever the case may be since the relationships will be preserved for as long as necessary,” adds Sibiya.
