New police commissioner for Gauteng

National Police commissioner Riah Phiyega has recently announced Lieut-Gen Lesetja Mothiba as the new leader of the men and women in blue in Gauteng.

Mothiba, who has been described as a competent, experienced and skilled leader, once served as a divisional commissioner for visible policing.

He has been in the role of Provincial commissioner in an acting capacity since the departure of Lieut-Gen Mzwandile Petros.

“He brings with him over 30 years of experience to the position, having gone up the ranks within the SAPS since joining the police in 1982,” says Capt Kabelo Marumo, from the SAPS Gauteng Provincial Head Office Communications, in a statement.

According to Marumo, Mothiba served as commander for seven years at the Alexandra police station, six years at the helm of Human Resource Development and the last four years as the divisional commissioner: Visible Policing.

“Mothiba has also excelled academically, boasting a National Diploma in Police Administration, which was attained in 1989, a Bachelor’s Degree in Police Science and a BA Honours Degree, which he attained in 1994 and 1997 respectively,” adds Marumo.

The commissioner is busy with his Master’s Degree in Policing.

Mothiba succeeds Major-Gen Bethuel Zuma, who was last year appointed as the new police commissioner for Gauteng to replace Petros.

Zuma’s appointment as Gauteng’s new provincial police commissioner was, however, reversed after it emerged he was facing criminal charges on drunk driving, among other charges.

Phiyega said she was only made aware of the pending case after she made the appointment.
