Mercy Haven temporarily closes down for construction

Mercy Haven, a shelter for abused women and children, has temporarily closed down due to repairs being conducted and will reopen on July 1.

According to Tony Lubbe, the centre’s chairman of the board, the decision to make repairs was collective, as it was made by the seven board members.

“The building was established in 1907 and over the years has been deteriorating; you have leaks and dangerous wires. As the new management, we are picking up the pieces and sweeping the floors so that the centre can provide the best service,” explains Lubbe.

Lubbe says that there have been rumours that the centre has permanently closed down, but says this is not the case.

“I want to assure residents that it will only be closed for 60 days as construction and repair work has already begun.”

He says in July when its doors open, there will be more staff members available and more programmes held.

“Under new management, new staff members have been employed, including a social worker, an auxiliary social worker, a manager and an administration assistant. This will improve services and ensure that we assist our women and children efficiently,” he adds.

Lubbe expresses gratitude for the continuous support, donations and corporation from their clientèle.

“Our 15 women have temporarily been taken in by shelters around Boksburg but will return by the end of June,” he explains.

The centre has recently been experiencing bad publicity as one of the auxiliary workers was accused of verbally abusing women she was counselling.

Lubbe says the auxiliary worker served the centre for 10 years, but had to be dismissed following an internal investigation.

* Mercy Haven will host a Grand Bizarre to raise funds on Saturday, June 28, at the Parkdene Recreation Centre, from 9am to 4pm.

Lubbe says it will be a community fun day for entertainment and education purposes.

He urges members of the public to attend and support the cause.

“There will be food, raffles, auction of donated goods and music for entertainment,” he adds.
