xThis comes after the State recently repealed laws that prevent inmates from voting while in prison for a crime.
According to the Boksburg prison spokesperson, Patrick Thobejane, 347 offenders voted at the Boksburg management area, which includes Heidelberg.
“Among them were sentenced offenders, awaiting trial detainees and juvenile offenders,” explains Thobejane.
“By 7.30am the station was already running and was closed just after noon. Polling proceeded successfully without any untoward incident,” says Thobejane.
Prison officials also exercised their rights to vote at the prison.
