This comes after residents have been complaining that their wheelie bins are being stolen.
One complainant says she was told to pay R550 by municipality to replace her bin which was stolen.
“I cannot keep an eye on my bin the entire day and monitor it as there is no fixed refuse collection time,” says the distressed resident.
Acting metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says Waste Management Services has recently moved to a fixed removal system to simplify the collection of refuse, and residents have calendar’s which notify them a year in advance of the three collection days.
“A fixed time in the day for a specific area is not possible as all collection vehicles are subjected to traffic volumes as well as distance to landfills, which all impact on the time of refuse collection at a specific time,” explains Gadebe.
Gadebe says the tariff to be paid is determined by the Waste Management Services Department.
“If a refuse bin is, however, damaged or broken during the process when the bins are serviced by the Council, the Council will replace such a bin free of charge.”
