No further charges for wheelie bins

The Ekurhuleni metro says there will be no extra charge to residents for the new 240-lt wheelie bins.

The implementation of the bins has been causing somewhat confusion amongst residents.

Residents thought that the R132 monthly refuse removal charge would increase and that they would be billed a further R109 refuse charge per month once they get their new refuse bins.

Acting metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says that this is a misunderstanding.

“Previously residents were paying for refuse removal services based on their stand size. With the introduction of the bins, the service is charged based on the bin collection which reduces the cost to R109.

“Please note that this is not additional to the R132.”

With the implementation of the new bins by municipality, residents have also had a number of queries with regards to the new processes.

Issues such as recycling, refuse bags and extra refuse charges are just some of the concerns that have been raised.

The new refuse bins do not cater to recycling.

Gadebe says residents must note that the metro does not provide a residential recycling service as yet.

Other do’s and don’ts from municipality regarding the bins are as follows:

* Residents are requested to place their bins outside their homes at 7am on the collection day as indicated on their calendars.

* The bins must then be removed from the kerbside as soon as possible after they have been emptied.

* Lids on the bins are to be tightly closed to avoid littering and rodent access.

*The bins are the property of the metro and are not to be painted or permanently marked; they are also to remain at the address they were allocated even when the resident moves.

* No additional bags are to be placed out next to the bin.

* Residents should not dispose the following into the bins: rocks, soil, commercial, industrial or building waste, car batteries, gas cylinders, motor oil and solvents, fire arms or explosives, dead animals or carcasses and any hazardous items.
