EMS expects more rain in future

Due to heavy rains the past few weeks, incidents of flooding were reported in certain parts of the country.

Incidents range from damaged housing infrastructures and washed away roads and bridges.

Four people were reported to have lost their lives due to drowning and 290 were displaced. Twelve people have been rescued and one was reported missing.

According to Emergency Management Services (EMS) media liaison, William Ntladi, Boksburg had a couple of known flooded areas around the CDB which were attended to immediately.

The managers of the fire stations around Boksburg, as well as managers throughout Ekurhuleni, patrolled the prone areas for site inspection and to all other areas for identification and assistance.

That included Boksburg CBD and all other surrounding suburbs of Boksburg.

The prone areas like Railway Street (under the railway bridge near Tambo Memorial Hospital), and Trichardts Street, near the Boksburg Civic Centre, were minimally affected.

“The drain system managed to clear water up after a short while,” says Ntladi

Around the whole area of Boksburg, including Vosloorus, the EMS didn’t experience any devastating floods like in other areas around Ekurhuleni.

On Saturday, March 8, Brickfield Road near Vosloorus cemetery was closed for traffic, as few vehicles were stuck in the middle of the road due to water flooding.

EMS had to close the road and assisted those individual motorists to pull their vehicles out to safety.

The duration was also for a while as the draining systems managed to handle the flow.

The same applied to areas like Vosloorus Extension 25 and 28.

A couple of houses experienced flooding. On the EMS’s arrival, water was already cleared up by storm water draining systems.

However, no drowning or severe damages were brought to the attention of the EMS.

Ntladi brings it to the residents’ attention that the EMS is still expecting more rain in the future and they would like people to be on high alert for flooding.

“Some of the roads, if flooded, will be closed temporarily for safety reasons.

“We plead with the motorists to persevere in such circumstances as this can save lives, properties and precious time for everyone,” says Ntladi.
