Ruthless shootings haunt city

A dispute over ownership of late parents’ house turned fatal on February 12, when a man allegedly gunned down his brother in Cinderella, according to a police report.

“The suspect entered his brother’s bedroom at about 10am, confronted him, whipped out a gun, and shot him four times, while his terrified wife was watching,” says spokesperson for the Boksburg SAPS, Lieut Mathanda Ngobese.

The victim was rushed to Tambo Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries moment after his arrival. The wife was not injured.

The suspect was later arrested and charged with murder.

He made his first court appearance on February 14, where he was denied bail, and was remanded to custody. He again appeared in court on Monday, February 17, and has been granted R7 000 bail.

He is expected to appear again on March 24.

A family member told the police that the fatal shooting was apparently sparked by a long-running dispute between the two brothers, over ownership of a house in Cinderella.

* In another shooting, a 63-year-old Sunward Park man, Sydney Qithi, shot his wife four times, before turning the gun on himself on February 15.

The woman was rushed to hospital, where she is still fighting for her life.

Qithi’s body was taken to Germiston State Mortuary.

According to a police report, the couple had a history of domestic violence, and Qithi was even served with a domestic violence interdict.

“The horrific incident came after Qithi accused his wife, who is a teacher at a local school, of having an extra marital affair,” says Ngobese.

The man’s firearm was confiscated before the incident, and it remains unclear how he got it back.

* In another incident, police arrested a man after he threw his girlfriend and her child into the Boksburg “Doom’s” Lake, just before 6pm, on February 12.

The victims were rescued by security officers, who were at the time patrolling the lake.

The man was charged with attempted murder.
